Lake Jazz Band Attends Festival, is Recognized by Jazz Professionals (Lake Jazz Fest is April 26)
Friday, March 17, 2017 the Lake High School (LHS) Jazz Band participated in Ashland University’s annual Maplerock Jazz Festival. This festival brings together guest artists from around the state and country to listen to high school jazz bands perform; these artists then lead clinics with the high school musicians to review and discuss their performances. Lake was one of eight jazz bands (six high school and two Ashland University groups) to participate.
“We had the pleasure of having Chris Anderson, trombonist with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, and Wayne Bergeron, nationally and internationally renowned trumpeter, as our clinicians. They were very impressed with the work that our students produced and provided some ways to continue enhancing our jazz knowledge,” said Lake Jazz Band Director Josh Laux.
That evening the guest clinicians performed with Ashland’s top jazz band in a closing concert. Not only were our students provided the opportunity to witness phenomenal jazz musicianship, but some of them were also recognized. The clinicians made note of high school musicians as groups performed throughout the day to be recognized as outstanding performers.
Furthermore, any of these individuals who are seniors and planning to attend Ashland University automatically qualified for a participation scholarship to help defray the cost of college tuition. Lake had a staggering 10 out of 18 musicians recognized for their abilities, the most of any group performing that day! Lake Jazz Band members recognized were: Cassidy Ditchkus, Jason Zwick, Adam McClosky, Nick Kohler, Sam Merendino, Emily Schrembeck, Logan Martin, Rachelle Leeper, Sam Bruner, and Lucas Spencer.
“We are very proud of all members of the Lake High School Jazz Band, and hope that you will help them finish their year off strong by attending the Lake Jazz Festival which will take place Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in the LHS Performing Arts Hall beginning at 7 p.m.,” added Laux.
