Groundbreaking for Lake’s New Grades 7-12 Building is Set
Lake Local Schools will conduct a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Middle School/High School building at the corner of Market Ave. and Lake Center St. in Uniontown Monday, March 20 at 9 a.m. with shiny shovels ready to turn dirt – and perhaps a few inches of snow.
Site preparation has been underway at the south end of Lake High School for the past month to accommodate a new two-story, 80,000-foot classroom addition in what will become part of the campus for students in grades 7-12.
The district held a groundbreaking for its new grades 2-6 building last fall.
“We are excited to reach this next milestone in the remodeling and building of new facilities within our school district,” said Lake Local Superintendent Kevin Tobin. “We thank the community, whose support of our bond issue in May, 2015 made this possible, and our students and staff, whose daily motto is ‘one day at a time’ as we continue along this process. We are also proud that all our school construction projects are currently proceeding on schedule and within budget. ”
Lake Board of Education members Jenny Anderson, Dave VanderKaay, Derrick Bailey, Dave Poling, and Debbie Cain, school administrators and staff, community members, and representatives from SoL Harris Day Architects and Hammond Construction will be on hand during the 30-minute ceremony. Offering brief remarks will be Superintendent Tobin and Board President Bailey.
Community members are invited to attend this groundbreaking; public parking is available by Blue Streak Stadium.
Large scale construction activities, including installation of steel girders and a two-story framework will begin on the site when weather permits in early spring of 2017. The southern expansion will tentatively be complete by the 2018-2019 school year.
Additional construction and renovation on the grades 7-12 building will be finished by early 2020, and will include the demolition of the present Lake Middle School and the addition of an extensive parking area in its place.
Meanwhile, site preparation has also been completed on the district’s new grades 2-6 135,000-square-foot building off of Sunnyside St. in Hartville. It will replace the existing Hartville and Lake Elementary located along Belle and Lincoln Streets. It is slated for completion by the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
Finally, plans call for the existing Uniontown Elementary to be transformed into a PreK-1 building. To date a new playground has been installed at the rear of the existing building, to allow for upcoming construction of a media center, gymnasium, and classroom addition to the south and east of the existing building. The remodeled PreK – 1 school is scheduled to open its doors to students after winter break of the 2018-2019 school year.
