Lake Elementary and Lake Middle School Receive 2018 Momentum Award

Lake Elementary and Lake Middle School staff learned this week that their buildings have received the Momentum Award for 2018 from the State Board of Education. This is the third consecutive year that Lake Elementary has received this state recognition, and the first year for Lake Middle School. The education award was first introduced in 2015.

The Momentum Award is given annually by the State Board of Education to recognize schools and districts that receive straight A’s on all-valued added measures on their state report card.  An ‘A’ on the progress report indicates students made significantly more than expected improvement during a school year.

To be eligible, the school or district also must have enough students in at least two value-added subgroups, which include gifted students, students with disabilities, and students whose academic performance is in the lowest 20 percent of students statewide.

“As a Momentum Award winner, your school’s report card shows your school is committed to its students’ success by ensuring students exceeded the growth expectations in English language arts and mathematics. I also congratulate you on recruiting and motivating the high-quality leaders and staff needed to make this happen,” stated State Board of Education President Tess Elshoff in the e-mail.

“Ohio’s strategic plan for education, Each Child, Our Future, is the state’s plan to ensure each student is challenged, prepared, and empowered for his or her future by way of an excellent prekindergarten through grade 12 education.  Our mission is to prepare students for a future that has yet to be written.  Many consider this to be a daunting endeavor. Your education team, however, has clearly embraced this challenge,” Ms. Elshoff added.

“I am proud of our Lake Elementary staff and they are very deserving of this award.  Our staff is student centered and goes above and beyond to meet the needs of all learners.  They collaborate as a team to design instruction that is challenging and engaging for our students.  Their focus on best practices in curriculum and instruction has resulted in our receiving the Momentum Award for the third year in a row,” said Lake Elementary Principal Donna Bruner.

“While scores on a test don’t always reflect the success of a child, it’s nice to receive this state recognition Momentum Award.  I’ve always known that as an entire staff we strive daily to be the best and prepare our students to achieve success,” said Brian Reed, associate principal at Lake Middle High School, and former principal of Lake Middle School before the two buildings were merged.

“To be able to share with our staff that their hard work, dedication, and commitment is noticed is a good thing.  I am really proud of the teachers and their efforts.   We live in such a great community, so it is equally important to recognize our families and students for their commitment and trust in us on a daily basis," Reed added.
