Farewell Event for Hartville and Lake Elementary Schools is Set for April 7, 2018
Come one, come all to a “Farewell Hartville and Lake Elementary: A Celebration of Memories” event set for Saturday, April 7, 2018, from 4-8 p.m. at both school buildings to say goodbye to Hartville and Lake Elementary School prior to their scheduled demolition during the summer of 2018.

Planned activities include the following, with a goal of helping all visitors to ‘step back in time,’ share favorite school memories, and celebrate two buildings that have served the Lake Local School District well for many years:

• A reception for Lake alumni with light refreshments provided from 4-6 p.m. in the Lake Elementary Big Gym.

• A basketball free-throw contest in the big gym, allowing current Lake High School basketball stars, as well as those from yesteryear, to face off at the free throw line from 4-6 p.m. in the Lake Elementary Big Gym.

• Two free music programs featuring music by talented Lake student musicians of all ages, will be staged in the Hartville Elementary auditorium from 4:15 – 5:15 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. in the Hartville Elementary Auditorium.

• A chili meal with sides, milk, and ice cream bar, a long standing lunch served on Mondays at Hartville school years ago, will be served from 4:30 -6:30 p.m. in the Lake Elementary cafeteria. Call to make a meal reservation – cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under- by calling Karen Buckel in the Hartville Elementary office at 330-877-4278, or Lisa Weiland in Lake Elementary in the Lake Elementary office at 330-877- 4276 by Friday, April 6, 2018.  Payment will be taken for meals with cash, and by check made payable to ‘Lake Local School District,’ at the main entrance to the event, at Door 3 on Lincoln St. the day of the event.

Visitors can walk through both schools on their own throughout evening.

• A 1950s Y-Teen dance with high school dancers will take place in the Lake Elementary Little Gym from 5-6:30 p.m.; attendees that night are also invited to dress in ‘50s attire if they’d like to!

• A silent and live auction of unique Lake-related items, including selected items from the two buildings, from 7-8 p.m. in the Big Gym.

• Colorful student artwork and historic Lake photos and memorabilia reflecting staff, students, and activities through the years will be on display.

• A commemorative Hartville School ornament, sold by the Lake Township Historical Society (LTHS), will be available for purchase during the event April 7. Cost is $15 per ornament; cash or checks payable to LTHS will be accepted. For info contact Dana Protsman at dprotsman@neo.rr.com.

• A complimentary bus shuttle service will be provided continuously between the Blue Streak Stadium parking lot and Hartville/Lake Elementary buildings by Lake Local Schools for the convenience of event attendees from 3:45 – 8:30 p.m. This will hopefully alleviate parking and traffic issues that may arise around the two school buildings during the event.

• Parking will be reserved next to doors 7 and 11 at Lake Elementary for senior citizens wanting easy access (no steps and an elevator) to events taking place in the Big Gym.

In addition, by popular demand, “Farewell Lake Elementary” and “Farewell Hartville Elementary” pre-orders for commemorative royal blue t-shirts costing $12 each in adult sizes small, medium, large, and x-large, and youth sizes small, medium, and large are now being accepted.  NOTE: Adult t-shirts in larger sizes (2X, 3X, and 4X) will also be available, at an additional cost.

To order one and make payment, (checks and cash only, please, checks should be made payable to ‘Lake Local Schools’), see Karen Buckel in the Hartville Elementary office at 330-877-4278, or Lisa Weiland at the Lake Elementary office at 330-877-4276 through April 6, 2018.  Sample shirt sizes will be available in the Hartville main office if shoppers want to see the shirts before placing their order through April 6, 2018.  Shirt orders and payment will also be taken the day of the event, April 7, at a t-shirt table.

Those ordering t-shirts will be able to pick them up at Beatty’s Sports shop, located at 1186 Woodland St SW, Hartville.  Beatty’s will contact all buyers by phone when t-shirts are ready to pick up, tentatively by April 21, 2018.

This special event is a collaborative effort between Lake Local Schools, the Lake Township Historical Society, and Lake alumni.  The current Hartville Elementary building, built 91 years ago and originally known as Hartville School, opened in 1927 for students in grades 1-12.  In constant use through the decades, it has been remodeled and expanded during its 91 years, and currently houses students in kindergarten through third grade.  It is the oldest operating school building in Stark County, according to county school records.

Lake Elementary, built in 1954 originally as a new wing for Hartville High School, currently houses students in grades 4-5.

Stay tuned for more updates about this event as they become available.
