Attend "Be Present" Presentation Feb. 1, 2018
Lake High School is pleased to partner with Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) and Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Recovery (StarkMHAR) to present ‘Be Present’ Feb. 1, 2018 beginning at 6 p.m. as an open community event in the Lake High School Performing Arts Hall (PAH); please enter using Door 5.   All Lake parents and community members/business leaders are invited to attend.

Adolescence is a challenging time for any young person.  It is a period of dramatic changes, transitions from middle to high school to college, and self-discovery that can sometimes contribute to isolation, depression, and other mental health issues.  In response, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) has launched Be Present – a statewide multimedia education campaign.

The Be Present campaign educates and empowers peers, friends, classmates, and siblings to provide needed support.  It also makes youth more aware of and able to address their own emotional state.  Rather than feeling isolated, the campaign wants teens and young adults in Ohio to be seen, heard and supported, not judged.  The Be Present campaign is all about “how to grow through it.”

The campaign includes a website (www.BePresentOhio.org), a multi-platform presence on social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat), print ads and digital PSAs on Pandora Radio. The website features an online toolkit to help young people demonstrate the power of presence by getting involved at one of three levels:

Friend: registration not required; everyone who visits the main campaign website can become a friend and gain access to videos, email updates, activity calendars and other campaign materials.
• Advocate: registration and parental permission (if under age 18) required; includes access to demographic profiles, tutorials about coping with stressors for self and others; ability to order/download campaign materials, disseminate messages to peers and participate in regional trainings.
• Leader: username/password required for entry; ability to connect with other advocates throughout Ohio for leader training, sponsor support groups and other peer activities; participate in more intensive training and certification opportunities and become eligible for incentives.

The community Be Present presentation at 6 p.m. will be a follow-up to a similar presentation given earlier in the day to Lake ninth and tenth graders.

(On a related note, Lake High School will also be hosting Lake Township resident Travis Bornstein of Hope United to speak Feb. 1, 2018 to eleventh and twelfth grade students from 9 – 10 a.m. in the PAH.  His discussion-based presentation will include education about the opioid and heroin crisis, the danger of over prescribed prescription pain medications, the latest statistics on opioid use, and the story of his own son, Tyler, who was a Lake graduate.  The program will conclude with questions and answers.)

Find more info about Hope United and resources at www.HopeUnited.Life.  This non-profit is made up of branches that include; Breaking Barriers (education), Hope and Healing (Support), and True Recovery (Recovery).  The support groups are faith-based support groups for families who have lost a loved one to a drug overdose (The Well), help families currently living with someone in active addiction (Loving with Grace) and supports children and parents affected by the epidemic (Love Bears All).

Hope United’s vision for recovery is to create an environment for people seeking full spectrum treatment from substance use disorder on a state-of-the-art sober living campus in Summit County, Ohio.
