Multiplication Sundae Celebration

Since January, we have been learning our multiplication facts.  To celebrate our success, we had an ice cream sundae.  Now we are practicing them over and over so we are quicker.

Habitats

Over the past week of school, students have been visiting different habitats:  grasslands, ocean, rainforest, desert, tundra.  They've been learning how animals and plants adapt to the different climates.  They also met Steve, Mrs. Carey's desert gecko!

In addition, we started learning about life cycles.  So we began an experiment where we watch and graph the growth of mealworms.

Junior Achievement

Today we started Junior Achievement, a program that teaches about communities and people in societies.  This curriculum helps us teach our standards in Social Studies.  Mr. Tobin, Lake's high school principal, is our guest teacher.  He taught us about the "zones" in a community:  farming, residential, industrial, business, and multipurpose.

Kookin' with Kids

We had an opportunity to use some of our measurement, research, and science standards this week.  The food service department organized food stations for our class.  We researched the unusual ingredients we were using, measured the ingredients, and figured out how to follow a recipe.  We made guacamole, mango salsa, black bean salsa, and 3 different smooties that used oranges, limes, strawberries and kiwi.  We learned how to "eat the rainbow" as Miss Mandy taught us.  In a few months, we  will be featured on Lake Television.  When we know more details, I'll let you know.

Ronald McDonald House of Akron

Today the representatives from the Ronald McDonald House of Akron came to visit.  They told us how the pop tabs help the House buy technology for the parents to use while they stay there.  They also encouraged us to keep saving our tabs.  We have collected about 250,000 pop tabs this year!  Please keep helping us save them!

Rocks and Minerals

DSC03175.JPG

We are studying rocks and minerals for the next 2 weeks.  See if your child can answer these questions.

1. Is clay a rock?  Why?

2.  How do volcanoes create rocks?

What is the rock cycle?
