Welcome to Language Arts with Mrs. Jones!
In Language Arts this year, we will explore a variety of genres in reading, including but not limited to realistic fiction, poetry, biographies, folk tales and informational text. We will also practice our writing skills for many purposes. We will write letters, journal entries, informational reports, persuasive essays, personal narratives, and fictional narratives.
WEEKLY ROUTINES FOR LANGUAGE ARTS: Each week, unless otherwise noted, students will be responsible for the following three tasks:
1. Students will be required to complete a reading log with parent signature which records a total of 60 minutes for the week. Students may read from a book of their choice.
(Due on Friday each week)
2. Students will be given a weekly journal prompt. They should write a minimum of five sentences in response to the prompt. Students will receive feedback on their writing in the journal.
(Due on Friday each week)
3. Students will have spelling words to practice each week. These words will be listed in your child's agenda. Each month a Writing Conventions Assessment will be given, and any of the words studied in the previous month may be part of that assessment. Students can quiz themselves and play games to review the words on www.spellingcity.com.
Some time will be given during the school day to work on journals and spelling practice, but whatever is not completed in class, needs to be completed as homework. These tasks should not take up more than 20 minutes out of each evening. Please feel free to email or call me if you have any question or concerns. Thank you for your support in helping your child to become a better reader and writer!
