
Questions about reading selections
General themes or types of questions the reader will be asked:
Literary Text (fiction)
• Setting of the story (when, where does the story take place); How is the setting important to the story?
• Character’s actions & feelings: Describing how a character feels and how do you know (support with evidence from the story and be able to describe why a character does something in the story.)
• Understanding sequence of events
Informational Text (non-fiction)
• Facts and opinions
• Cause and effect
• Details from selection
• Using subheadings as main ideas and be able to decide what are supporting details or info from the selection that would fit into that subheading
• Compare & contrast information given
• Understanding sequence of events
Reading Process (reading comprehension) ~ all types of selections
• Will ask the reader specific details directly from the story.
• Drawing conclusions and making inferences (putting the “pieces” or clues together that the reader can assume what has happened)
• Evaluate (think about something that has happened and decide why it happened)
• Main Idea of entire selection or sections
• Understanding the author’s purpose for writing the selection
Vocabulary ~ all types of selections
• Understanding synonyms and antonyms for words used in the story
• Word meaning: given the dictionary definitions of a word, the reader needs to decide which definition matches how it is used in the selection.
• Choosing the meaning of the word, given in the context (use) of the sentence.
• Metaphors and similes
