Weekly Update 5/14-5/18

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the warm weather and longer day light hours. I’m sure most of you are  spending your evenings on softball or baseball fields as most of the kids are talking about it throughout the day. They are very excited about playing and I’d be willing to bet that you enjoy watching them also. Things are starting to wrap up here in the classroom with all of our major end of the year assessments being given this week. We try to get these things finished up before all of the parties and additional activities start to take place. It should be a fun wrap-up to the year.

A Few Reminders:

-Relay for life week is all this week. There is no special activity today, Wednesday, but Thursday is sunglasses day and Friday is hat day. We are collecting coins for the Relay fund all this week in our classroom. Second grade is currently winning for the entire school and we want to keep that going! Mini-Relay for life is this Friday, weather permitting, we will be outside for a bunch of fun activities that promote health and wellness. The kids and teachers really have a blast with those activities.

-The Principal’s Cook out is next Friday, May 25 and we will all be munching down on hotdogs, watermelon, and ice cream outside in the field. If you would like your child to purchase the cook-out lunch it is the same price as a typical school lunch or they can pack and will still eat outside with all of the other kids and teachers.

-We have no school on Monday May 28 for Memorial Day.

-Classroom Picnics are on Wednesday May 30 for those room parents that signed up at the beginning of the year.

-Last day of school and report cards home on Thursday May 31. Only 10 more school days after today.

What’s Happening in the Classroom:

-Like I said before we are finishing up all major reading, writing,  and math assessments this week. If you have any questions about grades coming home please don’t hesitate to ask. I think they are all ready for 3rd grade!

-We finished up our Biography projects last week and I was very, very impressed with the work the kids did. They have come so far from the beginning of the year and it has really been amazing to see the work that they have been able to complete independently on these monthly projects. Lots of confidence has been built and your support at home as only helped them be successful.

-In science this week and next we are talking about butterflies and their parts, life cycles and how they contribute to the environment. Each second grade classroom has about 8-10 caterpillars and we have been watching them grow, form their chrysalis and now we are waiting for them to hatch and become butterflies in our butterfly net. We will watch them for a few days and then release them in our school’s science garden.

That is all for now. If you are interested in watching the HS Track team compete at the district meet they will be competing tonight and Friday night at North Canton Hoover. Go Blue Streaks!

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks and have a great weekend,

Mike

Weekly Update 5/7-5/11

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well and getting ready for the final stretch of the school year. Things are starting to wrap up and we have been talking daily about making good choices and working/acting like we are third graders. We have a lot of fun activities planned in the last couple of weeks and the kids are aware that things will be missed if they are not able to complete the tasks given in class and/or unable to follow the classroom rules/expectations. I don’t foresee any major issues and we will surely enjoy the last few days together.

A Few Reminders:

-The weather is starting to warm up and I have been reminding the kids about bringing water bottles in to help them stay hydrated throughout the day. Remember to put a sock on the water bottle so when it “sweats” it doesn’t always get over the desk. Also, I wanted to give you a heads-up if they come home and are telling you about our B.O. talks here in class. The kids come off the playground sweating and 24 of them in a hot room tends to begin to stink. I just remind them of the importance of good hygiene and putting on clean socks and t-shirts every day. I never single out a kid or go into depth on the topic, but it’s something we talk about frequently at this time of the year.

-I sent you my end of the year evaluation yesterday. Please take the time to fill that out because it allows me to grow as a classroom teacher. Remember that all surveys are anonymous. Thanks for your help.

-The final PTO meeting is May 14 at 7:00 pm in Uniontown Library.

-We are having a toy sale here at school and all items will be $0.25. I believe it is tomorrow and/or Friday. I’ll let the kids know when I find out. All proceed go to Relay for life.

-Mini Relay for Life is next Friday, May 18. The kids will have a chance to participate in lots of fun activities that promote health.

-The Principals cook out is May 25.

-Classroom Picnics May 30

-Last day of School May 31. Only 16 days counting today! WoooHooo.

What’s Happening in the Classroom:

-We are starting to finish up our assessments for the 4th 9 weeks. The majority of all assessing will be completed this week and next week. We try to complete everything before the last couple days of school because of the craziness with other school activities taking place.

-Thanks for all of your help on the Biography projects. I really look forward to seeing their work today and tomorrow. The kids have really come a long way in being able to find information, put it into a format for presentation, and having the ability to get in front of the classroom to present. I’m sure that they have learned a lot about their famous American.

-Yesterday the Stark County Library came to visit with us and talk about the summer programming that is being offered through the library this summer. You can check out any of the information on their website or by visiting a public library. They were supposed to leave some information with us to give to the kids but I have not received it yet. (You notice the reoccurring theme of me not knowing the details on a lot of things. I try to stay on the “need to know basis” and let the ladies around here tell me what to do and when to do it. They say it will help me later in life. HAHA)

-Our classroom has recently received some caterpillars that we are watching go through their life cycle. They have been living in tiny cups munching on some food and are currently forming their chrysalises. In a about a week they should start to hatch and be flying around in our butterfly net. The kids will then have the opportunity to release them in the science garden. It’s a great way for the kids to see a life cycle in a short period of time. I’ve been told to be careful while releasing them because a couple of years ago a teacher was releasing her butterflies and a big bird flew through and grabbed one. The kids were a little traumatized. HA

Well that is all for now. I am done with track but the kids are still running. They will be competing in the Federal League Meet this Friday at Jackson. The next week will be the District meet at Austintown Fitch. Go Blue Streaks!

Have a good one and if anyone has a question please don’t hesitate to ask.

Biography Project Reminder

Hello,

Just a reminder that Biography projects are due tomorrow, Wednesday May 9, and students will begin presenting tomorrow and finish up on Friday. I am randomly selecting students to present tomorrow and the students know that means that they need to be prepared.

Remember, any type of presentation is suitable (PowerPoint, notecards, poster board, etc.). The project is only asking for the person’s name, birth/death, what she/he is famous for, and interesting facts. Please help your child but allow them to do the work.

Thanks,

Mike

Biography Project

Hello Parents,

We are working on Biographies of famous Americans in class this week and next. The students chose books out of our book box and have been given the assignment of completing the research and a way of presenting the information.

I have listed four requirements that need to be presented: 1) Name; 2) Birth/Death; 3) What the person is famous for; and  4) 3-4 Interesting facts about the person.

Your child will be presenting this project next Wednesday or Thursday. At computer lab they will set-up a PowerPoint file for this project that they can bring home to work on with you. If you choose not to work on a PowerPoint, that is fine and they can bring a couple of notecards (I would suggest 1 piece of information on each card)to school and a picture of the person and they can present the information that way. Either way is perfectly fine with me.

Your child will be bringing their information paper, the book, and their jump drives home tonight. Please return the books to school because they are Stark County Library Books checked out under my name.

This assignment is not meant to be a “major” project or take your hours to complete. I’m just encouraging the kids to read through a book about the person, find some information, and present it to the class.

If you have any questions please let me know. Thanks,

Mike

Weekly Update 4/30-5/4

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope everyone is having a nice week and had a nice weekend. With us being in May it has officially become the home stretch for the school year. I know the kids are excited (the teachers are too) but the one thing that we have been talking about daily is continuing to be good listeners and hard workers while we are here at school. I ask you to please talk about that at home, work with them to get their homework completed, and talk to them about being good friends and team players in the classroom. All the support they can get will make them that much more successful here at school.

A Few Reminders:

-I am still waiting back for a few permission slips for our field trip on May 17 to see the middle school play. It is a bright yellow sheet of paper and I need those back ASAP. If your child does not return the sheet they will not be permitted to go on the field trip and will have to sit in the office until we return.

-Popcorn day is this Friday and it is FREE!

-This Friday May 4 is our last bookmobile day of the year. Kids will only be returning books. If they forget to return a book on Friday they can return it to any Stark County Library.

-The principal’s cookout is scheduled for May 25. All kids will have the opportunity to eat outside but they can either purchase the hotdog lunch from the cookout or bring their lunch to school that day. If they choose to buy the cookout lunch it is the same procedure as normally buying a lunch from the school.

-Special Thanks to Mr. Silvis for coming in to our classroom last week to share his animals, calls, and knowledge. The kids really enjoyed everything and there are pictures up on the blog. Thanks again!

-20 Days of School left after today

What’s Happening in the Classroom:

-We finished up unit 11 math this past week and realized that there are a few areas that we still need to focus on as a class. We all need to be working on making change, multiplication and division, recognizing symbols on addition and subtraction problems, and working on 2-3 digit addition and subtraction problems. Please keep practicing with your child at home. We will continue to practice these skills daily and if your child received a “1” or a “2” on their math test they will have an opportunity to retest at a later date to see if progress has been made.

-Unit 12 math is a review of everything we covered this year.

-In Social Studies we are focusing on biographies of famous Americans. Each second grade teacher has highlighted a famous American and we are rotating classrooms to learn about each one. Some of them are: Helen Keller, Amelia Earhardt, Babe Ruth, Neil Armstrong, and Rachel Carson. Once we are completed with rotations each student will research another famous American and do a presentation on that person for the class.

-In science we are going back a month or two and talking about stars and the different constellations. We are lucky to receive the “Star Lab” from the Stark County Educational Center to use in our building this week. It is an inflatable dome, in our gym, that projects the stars and allows the kids to see the constellations. I have been trying to learn a few stories about these constellations to share, but I’m not promising anything special. There may be a “Groholy” constellation that they may be coming home telling you about. HAHA

Well that is all for now. I hope you all enjoy a nice, warm rest of the week and weekend. Our last track meet is this Friday at the complex and it is the Rock’em Relays. All of the events are relays and there are only a few schools attending, which usually makes it more exciting. Come on out and enjoy some Blue Streak Running.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Mr. Silvis Ohio Animals

We have been talking a lot about the different Ohio animals in class over the last couple of weeks. We were lucky to have Megan's dad, Mr. Silvis, come into our classroom to show us some of the Ohio animals he has hunted and to teach us a little about each animal. The class had the chance to handle wild turkey feet, wild turkey feathers, deer antlers, deer hide, a black bear, a deer head, and even some of the tools that hunters use to attract certain animals. Check out the link below to see the pictures.

Many thanks to Mr. Silvis for his time.

Weekly Update 4/23-4/27

Hey Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well. The weather has been crazy and I am really just hoping that the warm weather comes and stays. Hopefully it hasn’t been that bad with the baseball and the softball. Track has been freezing, so I’m sure it has been the same with those games. At least the Indians are on and they are actually playing well for a change. I give it about 2 more weeks and then they turn back to the same old Indians.

A Few Reminders:

-The snack sale was today and I didn’t even know about it. HA If you’d like your child to purchase a snack tomorrow morning (hopefully something will be left) send in $0.25 with them and they can buy a snack.

-Interim Reports came home yesterday. You do not have to send them back in with your child. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

-25 days of school left. (Not that I’m counting)

‑There will be many school events coming up in the final days of school. Stay posted.

What’s Happening in the Classroom:

-We are just finishing up Unit 11 in math. We will be taking the math test tomorrow and I do have to say that the kids have been doing a great job with multiplication/division and 2-3 digit addition and subtraction problems. Unit 12 is a review of everything that we have learned this year. Please keep practicing with your child because it has really made a difference in their ability to learn this year. Thanks for all of your help.

-We are just finishing up our Ohio Plants and Animals unit this week. Last week we talked a lot about plants, their parts, their importance, and we also did some research on different plants throughout our habitat. Throughout the last couple of weeks your child also chose an Ohio animal, did some research, and put together a PowerPoint Presentation to present to the class. We just finished up those presentations and the kids did a great job. I’d be happy to send you your child’s presentation if you just email me.

-We are going to have a special guest tomorrow for our Ohio animals unit. Megan Silvis’ father is an avid hunter and outdoorsman and is coming in to our classroom to share some of his items. I will definitely get some pictures and put them up on the blog. Check it out tomorrow.

Well that is all for now. I hope you all have a good rest of the week. We have a track meet this Saturday at Lake Stadium. It is our annual middle school Meet of Champions. All of the best middle school track runners will be competing. Should be fun….and hopefully dry.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Take Care,

Mike

Interim Progress Reports

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that Interim Progress Reports will be coming home with your child tonight. I just wanted to let you know that we have only had 1 assessment in both social studies and science at this point in the grading period. Each of these assessments are only worth 10 points, so your child’s grade at this point may not accurately reflect where they are achieving. With the way our grading scale is set up, if your child gets a 9/10 it will be a “3”, 8/10 they will get a “2”, 7/10 or lower they will get a “1”. I just want to assure you and alleviate any stress at home that there are plenty of grades and opportunities for your child to improve upon their grades, not only in social studies and science, but in all other subject areas.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks,
Mike

High School Play

Hello Everyone,

We just got back from a preview of Lake’s High School Performance “Into the Woods.” It’s a mix of the different fairy tales into one new story. I would have to say that it was well done and the kids really enjoyed it. It has a little bit of everything for all ages and it will make you laugh. I just wanted to invite you all to go and watch the performance this weekend to support Lake’s Arts Programs.

They will be performing this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (April 19-21) at 7pm and on Sunday (April 22) at 2:00pm. You can find more information and but tickets online through Lake’s website or I believe you can  purchase tickets at the door.

A great community event to share with the whole family.
