Valentine's Party

All of the parties have been loads of fun this year. Valentine's Day is one of my favorite parties. I enjoy watching the kids open their cards and taking each sentiment very seriously! It's sweet! View the link below for photos:

Helping Others!

Each night one student took Hungry Kate home to generate a discussion about hungry children in Stark County. Our class planted lettuce to donate to the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank. We also invited Michelle Hinton to come and talk to the classes about hunger in our area. We supported a food drive and collected many nonperishable items for the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank on May 24th.

Young Inventors

Your children are so creative! First, everyone was asked to bring in scraps and old craft supplies. Next, we created something that would make the world a better place. Each student wrote a paragraph about their invention. We saw a food machine that would change the taste of what you were eating to make things you didn't like more tolerable. We also saw a teddy bear jet pack to keep your teddy bear away from your sister. View photos at the link below.

Economics Store

It's fun learning about economics. Especially when you get to set up a store and invite customers to come shop. Second grade students did just that! Each student created a shop and we invited first grade students over to our mall to browse and buy items. Before shopping, each student gave a little ad to attract customers to their business. As the shopping commenced, money was exchanging hands quickly and students were relying on their math skills. First grade students went home happy and then we shopped from each other. Afterwards, all proceeds went to Relay for Life. All together, students collected over $200.00! Check our photos on the link below:

Right to Read Week

We had a wonderful time relaxing with good books all throughout the week. Here are some photos of the centers that were located in the main hallway. You have to turn your head sideways for some of the shots. Sorry about that!

The theme was sports this year. The entire school read over 8,000 books and we celebrated with an assembly at the end of the week. Mr. Groholy, being such a good sport took one for the team! View the photos on the link below.

Biography Reports

The students worked diligently and wrote amazing biography reports. We learned so much as we listened to stories from Babe Ruth to Harriet Tubman to George Washington! It was a lot of work collecting facts and putting the information into a report. After each report we used the CPS clickers to ask three true/false questions to check everyone's listening skills. Most students were right on task! Check out the link below to view photos.

February Events

The students did beautiful work on their president cariacture sketches. It was fun finding facts about each president and encouraging others to guess who we wrote about. Students presented their reports to the class and a few were selected to read their president riddle on the announcements.

Happy Halloween

Thank you to Mrs. Stepic, Mrs. Palenshus, Mrs. Peresta and Mrs. Ek for planning our Halloween Party. The students had a wonderful time bowling with pumpkins, making mummy pumpkins, playing four corners and coloring. The treats were delicious and the costumes were grand! We've been working in the classroom all the livelong day!

In Social Studies we learned about U.S. symbols and landmarks. Students read several different books and they worked in small groups coloring pictures to display in our classroom window.  Our writing prompt for October asked students to write about a favorite monument.  Most students chose the Washington Monument.  It is the tallest monument in Washington D.C. Look closely and you will notice it is two different colors because the stone came from two different quarries.  You can go inside the Washington Monument for a beautiful view of our nation's capital.

Science Experiment with Sound

How can we transfer sound vibrations to our ears?  We know sounds travel through the air, but we discovered sounds travel through solids too.  For this experiment we needed spoons that had a piece of yard attached. First, we swung the spoon and heard it clang against a desk.  Then, we wrapped the ends of the yarn around our fingers and gently put our fingers inside our ears.  Then, we swung the spoon against the side of a desk a second time.  We were quite surprised by the beautiful bell we heard!
