2011 Mr. Millard gym classes

I have been offered the chance to teach the physical education for Uniontown Elementary and each day, seeing a fifth grade, then fourth grade class in the small gym of Hartville Elementary.

It is interesting to see the development of students through Lake Elementary.

We've started the year with messages on expectations, basic procedures, and some initial assessment of the where the students are at present.

The students will soon be getting more activities, that will help them learn to grow and develop physically and emotionally.  I strive for students to work hard and do the best they can do.
The achievement of specific goals pale to the importance of developing perseverence and the ability to focus on a task.

Dance & Rhythm

During the doldrums of winter, Physical Education explores rhythm and dance.

The benefits of dance are different than the common strength and endurance regiments often thought about in a gym class.

Balance, timing & teamwork are essential to executing a dance.  Students must be able to coordinate their actions with others, compensate for others that don't react as themselves, and anticipate upcoming actions.

Students learn about tolerance and self control.

There is much delight as they develop the skills of performing in conjunction with others.

Expectations

Gym class can work with slightly different behaviors than a strickly academic setting.  Movement is often the goal of physical education!  Much of the subject is focused on body/movement control.

Students often find that with properly focused strength, speed, flexibility, balance and endurance, they can succeed in ways just not possible in the class setting.

Appropriate attire for gym class

Phys.Ed. class has been more effective for children when they wear clothing that allows for rapid movement and maximum range of motion.  Delicate and tight-fitting clothes usually restrict kids from exporing their full capabilities.

Shoes-

Shoes need first to fit properly.  If they come off when the child runs, stops, and turns abruptly, the child will loose time working with shoes, instead of activities, and possibly risk falls and collisions with others.

Velcro is an easy answer for students that have difficulty tieing shoes.  Shoes that can be slipped on, yet stay on securely work just as well.

Gym shoes don't have to be new, but should be clean and an asset to their performance.
